FRENCH KING CAKE WORKSHOP

La Galette des rois

INSTRUCTORS: The French Alliance

The Galette des Rois (French King Cake) is a French tradition celebrated in January.

Families and friends share a round, flaky puff-pastry cake filled with almond cream. A small gem called a fève is hidden inside. Whoever finds the fève in their slice becomes the king or queen for the day and wears a paper crown that comes with the cake. We will bake the cakes together, hide the gem and carve the crust with traditional patterns, and while they're in the oven (about 45 minutes), we will make paper crowns. Then we will enjoy the galette together and celebrate the kings and queens!

PARTICIPANTS WILL LEARN:

  • French Cake recipe

  • How to decorate the pie

  • How to make paper crowns

  • The tradition of the gem (it comes a long way, from the romans)
