MASTER FILMMAKING

TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS JULY 21ST-AUGUST 12TH | 2-5 PM

Workshop series is twice a week for four weeks. Cost is for entire series. Signing up commits you to attend all eight classes. No prior experience is necessary. Upcoming filmmakers have an opportunity to up one’s skills as this workshop is based in time-tested cinematic techniques.

Discover the magic of filmmaking in a hands-on 4-week workshop. Meeting twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning July 21 in JUMP’s SKIP building, Master Filmmaking will introduce participants to the fundamentals of cinematic storytelling and production. Learn the art of filmmaking through respected industry techniques that have shaped cinema for more than 100 years.

PARTICIPANTS WILL LEARN:

Session 1: Camera basics

• Inner workings of a film camera

• Understanding optics and lenses

• Exposure and the exposure triangle

• Film exposure latitude

• Film aspect ratios

• Camera over and under cranking

• Basics overview of color and the color of light

Session 2: Lighting

• Understanding lighting

• Basic lighting setup

• Types of lights: Fresnel lens light, soft box, bounce and flat panel

• How to determine which type of lighting to use

Session 3: Framing, shot selection and camera movement

• Shot sizes and types

• Shot composition

• Lens selection

• Screen direction

• Dollies, tracking shots

• Handheld

Session 4: Sound

• Sound recording

• Types of mics

• Boom operation

Session 5: Production

• Explanation of set etiquette and protocol

• Selection of longer scripts taken from movie scenes

• Production begins, incorporating all elements

Session 6: Production

• Production continues

Session 7: Production

• Production concludes

Session 8: Workshop conclusion

• Footage is reviewed, compared and contrasted with original scenes

  • Students who provide an SSD have the opportunity to copy camera files that were filmed during workshop

  • Students will receive “Reflection on Cinematography” by Roger Deakins. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested is pursuing a career in cinematography.

  • Students will receive a free subscription to the magazine published by the esteemed American Society of Cinematographers.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

  • A journal to make notes

  • A laptop (optional) with DaVinci Resolve installed to understand how to ingest camera RAW files

  • Important: Be prepared to attend all classes, because this workshop builds on each prior class. Plan to attend all classes to avoid gaps in knowledge and skills learning as there is no make-up instruction.

CANCELLATION POLICY: If you are no longer able to attend, a full refund (minus service fees) is available for cancellations made up to 2 weeks (14 calendar days) prior to the workshop start date. Cancellations made less than 14 calendar days are nonrefundable. If JUMP cancels the workshop for any reason, attendees will be issued a full refund with fees.
